CCARBON/USP stands out in USP’s Excellence Award for Emerging Research Leaders

Research Director from CCARBON/USP, Maurício Cherubin, receives recognition from USP’s Rectorate for their scientific contributions.

On June 27, 2025, the award ceremony for the third edition of the “Excellence Award for Emerging Research Leaders” took place in the University Council Hall at USP’s Rectorate building in São Paulo.

Among the awardees was Professor Maurício Roberto Cherubin, Research Director at the Center for Carbon Research in Tropical Agriculture of the University of São Paulo (CCARBON/USP), who received the award in the field of Agricultural Sciences.

Professor Cherubin’s research focuses on understanding how land use and management practices — especially those related to regenerative agriculture, such as cover crops, integrated systems, no-till farming, and biologicals — affect soil health, plant productivity, carbon dynamics, and the resilience of production systems.

He seeks to identify management solutions that support the production of food, fiber, and energy while addressing the challenges of climate change. These practices aim to align climate adaptation and mitigation with environmental preservation.

“I would like to thank all my advisees and students, my colleagues at ESALQ and CCARBON, and the external research partners — both public and private — who truly make science happen at the university. And finally, I thank my family for their daily support, which makes it possible to carry out quality work.” (Professor Maurício Roberto Cherubin, Research Director at CCARBON/USP)

A total of eight faculty members were awarded, and seven honorable mentions were granted across eight fields of knowledge: Agricultural Sciences, Biological Sciences, Health Sciences, Exact and Earth Sciences, Human Sciences, Applied Social Sciences, Engineering, and Linguistics, Literature, and Arts.

The award was established in 2019 and is granted every three years to faculty members up to 40 years old who stand out for the impact of their scientific, artistic, or cultural research. Proposals are evaluated by a Selection Committee composed of USP faculty and external researchers representing all fields of knowledge. The award considers the scientific or social impact of research activities, their relevance to the development of the field of study, the visibility of the research conducted at the University, and USP’s engagement with society.

CCARBON/USP congratulates Professor Maurício Roberto Cherubin for the award. We take great pride in seeing one of our representatives recognized for its significant scientific contributions to tropical agriculture and addressing climate change. This award reinforces the center’s commitment to producing excellent knowledge focused on the sustainability of agricultural systems and developing scientific solutions to global challenges.
