CCARBON/USP Director Receives Sustainability Award from ABAG

Professor Carlos Eduardo Pellegrino Cerri awarded the Norman Borlaug Prize during the 23rd Brazilian Agribusiness Congress

Professor Carlos Eduardo Pellegrino Cerri received the Norman Borlaug – Sustainability Award. The award was presented by the Brazilian Agribusiness Association (ABAG) during the 23rd Brazilian Agribusiness Congress (CBA) on August 5, 2024, in São Paulo (SP).

Professor Cerri is an agronomist and a full professor in the Department of Soil Science at the “Luiz de Queiroz” College of Agriculture at the University of São Paulo (ESALQ/USP). He also serves as the Director of CCARBON/USP (Center for Carbon Research in Tropical Agriculture at the University of São Paulo).

The award received by Cerri is named after Norman Borlaug, one of the agronomists who has had the most positive impact on life on the planet. His actions and initiatives changed the fate of many countries, particularly through improvements in wheat production, contributing to the fight against poverty. Awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1970, Borlaug’s legacy has become synonymous with sustainability and food security. Receiving an award in his name is a recognition of significant contributions to the fight for everyone’s right to safe and healthy food. Moreover, the award highlights the role of agribusiness in reducing greenhouse gases and promoting a low-carbon economy.

The award presented by ABAG is a well-deserved recognition of the researcher’s work, acknowledged as a reference in studies on low-carbon agriculture. His efforts involve research related to soil management in carbon sequestration and greenhouse gas emissions. In addition to his outstanding research performance, Cerri is considered one of the five most influential Brazilian scientists on the global list of climate scientists, according to Reuters.

The Brazilian Agribusiness Congress has been held annually since 2002 and is regarded as one of the most important events in the sector in the country. The theme of the latest edition was Biocompetitiveness and featured the participation of prominent opinion leaders in Brazilian agribusiness. The event was organized by ABAG in partnership with B3.
