Welcome to the Center for Carbon Research in Tropical Agriculture at the University of São Paulo (CCARBON/USP)

Have you heard of the Center for Carbon Research in Tropical Agriculture at the University of São Paulo (USP)? This center, also known as CCARBON/USP, has been working since 2023 on actions for mitigating and adapting to climate change in tropical agriculture.

We have a global team of professionals and conduct research, innovation, and dissemination activities to promote low-carbon agriculture. Our main goal is to generate knowledge, technology, and human resources training in pursuit of solutions based on sustainable agricultural systems. This involves balancing the growing demand for food, fibers, and energy with environmental, social, and economic considerations.

Want to know more? Stay with us and learn about the initiative that aims to revolutionize the importance of our actions in the pursuit of greater sustainability in tropical agricultural production.

About the Center

CCARBON/USP is based at the “Luiz de Queiroz” College of Agriculture (ESALQ/USP), under the direction of Carlos Eduardo Pellegrino Cerri, a professor in the Soil Science Department.

CCARBON/USP is linked to the USP Rector’s Office and receives financial support from the São Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP). It originated from the Research, Dissemination, and Innovation Centers (CEPID), program of FAPESP. The program funds projects that address transformative issues in current knowledge with the potential for positive societal impact. Its researchers conduct bold, internationally excellent research on relevant topics in their fields.

According to Prof. Cerri, director of CCARBON/USP, the center currently brings together over 40 researchers and 100 students and post-doctoral researchers working multidisciplinary. Their activities are focused on 19 complex issues related to carbon and the impacts of climate change on agriculture.

“CCARBON/USP’s action strategy establishes the center as a high-level collaborative research environment and reinforces its position as a global reference in low-carbon agriculture”

Smart Management Solutions

CCARBON/USP aims to identify key challenges and implement solutions to increase the sustainable agro-food production of Tropical Agricultural Systems. The focus is on reducing greenhouse gas emissions and enhancing carbon sequestration through climate-smart management practices.

CCARBON/USP’s research objectives will be achieved through an interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary approach. This approach will collectively cover five main areas: soil, plant, animal, atmosphere, and digital tools.

The center plans to deepen its collaborations with national and international partners, promoting a global network to facilitate knowledge exchange and the most current agricultural practices. “By leveraging emerging technologies and innovative methodologies, CCARBON/USP aims to develop more efficient and sustainable agricultural management plans that contribute to climate change mitigation,” explains Prof. Cerri.

Additionally, the center will continue to enhance its scientific outreach activities, aiming to raise public awareness and engagement about the importance of low-carbon agriculture. Through these efforts, CCARBON/USP is committed to playing a leading international role in advancing science and practice in sustainable tropical agriculture and driving significant progress toward global climate goals.
