Carbon Countdown advances in the digitalization of data collection for one of the largest carbon mapping initiatives in Brazil

Partnership with Fronza Geo drives the development of digital solutions that will support field campaigns and project data management

The Carbon Countdown project took another step to modernize its research infrastructure with the kick-off of the partnership with Fronza Geo, the company responsible for developing the initiative’s technological solutions for data collection and management, on August 4 and 5.

During the two days of work, researchers from Carbon Countdown and the technical team from Fronza Geo aligned the requirements that will guide the development of the digital tools that will be used in the field campaigns carried out in all Brazilian biomes. The goal is to create an integrated infrastructure to support the standardized collection of soil and vegetation information, from the planning of expeditions to the consolidation of scientific data.

The discussions focused on the development of electronic forms that will be used in the field to record information on sampling points, document georeferenced photographs, monitor soil and vegetation collection, and ensure complete traceability of samples along the entire chain of custody.

An integrated platform to monitor the entire workflow

In addition to the digital forms, the requirements for an integrated monitoring and management platform were defined that will allow monitoring, in real time, the progress of field campaigns, the laboratory processing of samples and the organization of the project database. The solution was designed to ensure the integrity, standardization and reliability of the information produced, bringing together all stages of the workflow in a single environment.

The digitalization of these processes represents a strategic step forward for Carbon Countdown. By replacing conventional procedures with an integrated and scalable platform, the project seeks to increase the efficiency of field teams, reduce inconsistencies in data collection, and strengthen the governance of scientific information that will support one of the largest initiatives to quantify soil and vegetation carbon stocks ever carried out in the country.

Digital infrastructure for nationwide operation

The development of these technological solutions is essential to support the operational complexity of Carbon Countdown, which will carry out field campaigns in different regions of Brazil, involving teams distributed across all biomes. The standardization of collection protocols and the integrated management of information will allow greater agility in the execution of activities and greater security in the consolidation of the data produced throughout the project.

The new platform will also contribute to increasing transparency, interoperability and traceability of information, essential principles for large-scale carbon monitoring initiatives.

About the Carbon Countdown

Carbon Countdown is one of the largest carbon research initiatives ever conducted in Brazil. Developed within the scope of the Center for Carbon Research in Tropical Agriculture (CCARBON), a Research, Innovation and Dissemination Center (RIDC) funded by FAPESP, the project is carried out in partnership with Petrobras and Shell, with an investment of approximately R$ 100 million through the Research, Development and Innovation Clause (RD&I) of the National Petroleum Agency.  Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP).

The initiative will collect soil and vegetation samples in about 6,500 locations distributed across all Brazilian biomes to establish the first national baseline of soil and vegetation carbon stocks. The data will form a public database that will support carbon monitoring, reporting and verification (MRV), contributing to climate policies, restoration projects and the strengthening of the carbon market in Brazil based on robust scientific evidence.
